Word Game 2

I like word games, and I plan to present a few nifty ones on this Web site. Again, contributions are shamelessly solicited! Send them to crassman@verycrasswords.com.

Here’s a two-person word game that can be learned in a minute. However, the game is very challenging and is likely to put a strain on the most loving relationship.

The game requires paper and pen for each person, plus the ability for each player to hide his paper from the prying eyes of his opponent.

Each person writes out a 4-by-4 grid on his own piece of paper.

Each of the 16 cells must be large enough for him to write inside it a single letter of the alphabet.

The first person to play announces a letter of the alphabet. He and his opponent enter that letter somewhere within their grids.

The other person announces a letter of the alphabet. That letter, too, must be entered by each person inside an empty cell of his grid.

Play proceeds until 16 letters have been announced and written by the players somewhere inside their grids.

During the game, each player tries to obtain as many words as possible within his grid. Words may go from left to right, from top to bottom, or diagonally from left to right.

Intersecting,  overlapping and non-English words are allowed, at the discretion of the players. Purists prefer to permit only one “scoring event” per row or column, because this approach gives more value to skill and 4-letter words. However, this approach increases the chance that the last player will drop the J bomb — that is, announce a letter designed to harm his opponent.

The winning player is the one who has racked up the highest number of  points, based on this scoring system:
4-letter words are worth 25 points
3-letter words are worth 10 points

Below is an example of a complete game, with the scores for each gird. Isn’t this FUN?
